Hey, taichou --

When are we going to get to working with genjutsu? Nevermind what I'm doing, but shouldn't Konohako and Moegi get to know more about actually casting it? ~~I know you suck at it, but no reason for them to as well...~~ I get that getting better about detection will happen over time, but it feels like you only've barely touched it. And grudgingly at that.

Konokako, you need to work a little faster and stop daydreaming when setting up traps, because when you get distracted your traps end up being crap.

Moegi, good job on your traps. You just need to work on the speed.

Taichou - what did you think of the interaction of wires and explosive tags? Personally, I thought the flashbangs were a nice touch.

I took a break from my drawing homework to write up a list of everything I'm doing, because I've been feeling a lot more tired mentally and physically than I should be. This is what I came up with:

These are daily or nearly daily:

~~Morning~~ Village run
Can't really call this a morning thing anymore because the chance I get to do it actually depends a lot when Asuka-taichou's training us and for how long. I try and run daily, and I'm able to cover a hell of a lot of ground at a decent pace. Still can't do a whole lap down every single street and alley of the village but I'm working towards getting there. I'm also considering, in order to help with my chakra endurance, to use ~~kage~~ bunshin while running. Not the whole time as running partners, but, say, vaulting a wall. Make a ~~kage~~ bunshin, have it give me a 'step up' to get over the wall without ricocheting off of adjacent walls, and then cancel the jutsu. That should wear me out fast. I know I've good stamina, but with someone as jutsu-dependent as I am, I need that endurance to get through a long fight.
Team training with Asuka-taichou
This sort of lends into the previous note. Taichou's very big about efficiency and only using as much effort as absolutely necessary to get the job done. She's also remorseless and relentless in basics drilling. On the bright side, I'm getting much better at projectile evasion (even with the bloody padding), I'm fantastic at getting free of knots without jutsu ~~and Konohako and Moegi are getting a lot better at tying a person up~~. Though, Taichou says that next week I'll finally have the chance to tie them up. ~~Oh this will be fun.~~ The playing of hide-and-seek in the village is...interesting. Konohako's good at hiding, I'll give her that.
Genjutsu training with Kureno-sensei
Even more emphasis on control. And working on some more advanced stuff. This is taxing chakra-wise, and brain-wise.
Art/drawing class
I started taking this class because I thought if, say, I ever got assigned a scouting mission, I'd want to be able to accurately show what I'd seen, etc. I've learned, however, the bigger benefit is the learning of the uses of shadows and shading and the like. Drawing is simply defining the changes of light and shadow, and this is helping me a lot with light and shadow in my genjutsu. Maybe when the teacher decides to move us past using only a pencil, I'll learn more about colors.
Calligraphy class
Taking because I like it as a mental exercise (focusing on the precision of the strokes and the stroke order and the flourishes) and because I've got an interest in seals. If I ever get the opportunity to actually learn some, I better be able to write it out neatly. ~~Quite useful for writing out explosive tags.~~
Self-training
What I do specifically usually depends on what I feel like doing at the time. Kureno-sensei's water-training, illusion practice, projectile practice (though not at Tentsuke's place; I feel weird going there when he's not there), katon practice, meditating, reading the archives, jutsu practice, that sort of thing.

And this is all on top of what's got to be done in general around the apartment and what I have to do just to take care of myself.

On paper, it doesn't look like a lot, but everything's rather time-consuming. The fact I can find time for the occasional hang out with Kiba is amazing. I see Sakurai but rarely, and Aki too. Kaka-sensei's offered to have me come by to see the puppies, which I do want to do, I just seem to have trouble carving out the time.

I'm probably going to have to alternate my schedule by spreading out what I do. Can't really plot down anything, not even the classes. I show up to whatever session I can make it to. Morning, midday, afternoon, evening, that all depends on what Taichou's got us doing. Happily, the teachers understand so I don't get much more than disapproving looks.

So I have plenty of new reading materials courtesy of Kureno-sensei. This is excellent; it's tangible progress on my way towards being able to mindwalk.

The downside is, I'm going to have psychology and symbolism and guides to interpretations coming out of my ears in no time flat.

...which isn't too much of a downside. I like learning new things, and I'm looking forward to the practical aspects. So far it's mostly been reading reading reading, with some practice though I believe I got more done with Sakurai. Between him and the sticky-water, my control is getting a LOT better.

I still wish I could tell him about the illusion I did for Hinaji. And I'm curious now as to what his doujutsu looks like to the Sharingan.

I'll ask. Later.

Right now there's books to read.

Training is going well, even if I hate having to wear padding for the throwing exercises Taichou's assigned. Well, throwing practice for Konohako and Moegi, evasion training for me. Something that would be easier if I didn't have the padding, but ~~unfortunately~~ I can understand the reasons behind it.

I'm just awaiting the day when I can be the thrower and not the target.

I've got some rope burns from what Taichou calls 'guard and prisoner'. And guess who the prisoner is. One the one hand I'm getting better at getting free sans jutsu, but on the other my wrists look like crap, all red and raw and scabbed. Just what I need--MORE marks on my skin. Maybe I should invest in some gloves, like what Kaka-sensei has. I like the idea of having the metal plates on the back of my hands. If nothing else; additional defensive measure. And a backhand would be just plain wicked.

Taichou promises that at some point I'll get to be the guard. Right. I'll believe it when I see it.

I had a thought and have decided to act upon it. The compound ~~has~~ had a clinic, and all that medical information is really kind of going to waste. I don't understand a word of it, and that's when it's not written in the crappiest handwriting I've seen as then it's usually acronyms and shorthand!

Happily, despite sitting there for 11 years, the charts are still in pretty decent condition. As a precaution, I ~~and a pair of kage bunshin~~ sat and read through every freakin' one with Sharingan. So if worse came to absolute worst, I can reproduce them from memory. But they copied well, so I can send the originals to Tsurude for safekeeping and copies to Rin-san as more of an fyi.

Summer year 18: Narrative

They didn't get back to Konoha until almost the second week of May, as the Palace needed cleaning and temporary structures built until actual repairs and rebuilding could commence, plus assurances had to be made to the Daimyo that the threat was no longer a threat for the moment. When he had been told who, in fact, the targets were--Asuka and Sachiko--he had calmed down a little. And helped make sure the Konoha contingent could be ready to move out at any time.

The trip home had been happily uneventful. Ibiki had ordered Asuka and Sachiko to walk on opposite sides width-wise of the caravan tail. Both kunoichi had a very visible ANBU guard apiece who wouldn't even let them so much as take a piss by themselves. Sachiko didn't care (except when she had to step into the bushes), she spent most of her time focused inward, rousing only when addressed but her short, clipped responses quickly ended any attempts at conversation.

Once back in Konoha, most everyone was allowed to go home. Sachiko and Asuka, oh joy of joys, had first a chat with Ibiki one-on-one, and then a group chat where Tsurude could ask questions. Then they could go home.

The night where she'd gotten thoroughly drunk with Kiba had been fun, though fleeting. Not too long after, she and Naruko had The Talk with Sakurai, to explain everything,

She still needed something to do, and other types of training besides the mindwalking didn't much appeal. And she couldn't really do too much with the mindwalking, anyway, because Kureno was in the hospital. (Because of saving her, she remembered being told.) And she did continue the genjutsu-training with Sakurai, though the majority of his time was (of course) wrapped up with the hospital. Just how things were.

Without the hope of advancement that would've come with taking the chuunin exam, and without her sensei to give them team-things in general, her motivation to train drained swiftly. Oh, she could have used the reasoning of how she needed to better herself for whenever she had the final confrontation with Itae, but the thought angered her more. Wasn't she trying to live beyond her hatred? To live her life outside of what Itae wanted her to do? Re-elevating her sister's demise back to her highest ambition instead of letting it be one of a few just annoyed and frustrated her. Neither emotion inspired her to work, this time.

For a few days she had simply wasted hours standing in a spot along the main thoroughfare where she could see the giant gates, the high walls baked yellow-orange by the sun, the sentry towers where shinobi watched those coming and goings of other shinobi and of civilians while also checking travel papers. Messangers were also stalled for verification, and Sachiko bet someone was watching the skys for hawks though the mews were housed next to the Tower.

The first day no one took especial notice of her presence. She had remained in the shade for the most part, moving either with the sun or to get something from the overpriced food stall when the whim to eat struck her. The second day, at one of the shift-changes, a serious-eyed chuunin with a slight limp gave her a hard, overlong onceover on the way to the right-side sentry tower. The message was loud and clear: We know you've been hanging about here, and we don't appreciate it. Sachiko's reply had been a glance of surly innocence, stating she had as much right as anyone to lollygag around, since she had nothing better to do. The third day passed without incident, and on the fourth day, the watch commander on duty finally approached and told her to move along before she got a write-up for loitering. Sachiko hid the quiet temper-flare, choosing to nod with the expected deference shown a superior officer.

She wandered to one of the side gates to resume her gate-watching vigil. The sentries there chased her off at the end of her second day. At another side-gate she didn't even get through the whole day before getting ordered to go away.

Without that little bit to do, she started sleeping more. Not that Neko minded--the cat would happily curl up with her while an oscillating fan beat the air cooler. But the inactivity only aggravated Sachiko more, as she filled with useless energy she couldn't release in any constructive manner. Going for walks fouled her mood, as everyone else continued on with their lives and people prepared for the upcoming chuunin exam and the tourists that would bring. Someone's exceptionally cheerful tone finally pushed Sachiko to run so she wouldn't have to listen.

When she slowed a few blocks away, she had a small revelation. The running felt good. It was mindless and it exercised her while not falling into training. Plain and simple running was freedom of movement that relaxed her. Cheered, she kept running. She had an okay endurance level, so she kept running for some time.

Then had to keep herself from simply collapsing later from heat and thirst. At least she had forced herself to walk, and as she drank purchased a sports drink she thought about running regulary. Why not? Aside from the newly discovered benefits she had nothing else going on, it gave her something to do, and it would have long-term benefits. Maybe she could increase her distance-speed...

Having finally secured Leigh's advice and occasional running companionship, Sachiko let herself coast, mentally. She didn't want to think about her future, whatever it might be, and just ran. Every couple of days she went by Tentsuke's to see the animals and practice her projectile throwing in his backyard. That way she can tell him truthfully that she hadn't been slacking in her practicing.

THe Chuunin exam begins and Sachiko tries her damnedest to ignore it, but it's kind of hard to not see the foreign clothes and out-village forehead protectors when one runs daily through the central commercial district. She gets looks of course, but usually from the boys. When she ran with Leigh, though, all the gaijin stared but at the thick-browed, largely-endowed green-clad girl. Leigh ignored it in favor of chattering at Sachiko or just running in silence. The running in silence always strikes Sachiko as odd, as the chattering felt much more normal for the other. But the quiet was nice, too.

Now with fresh frustration to boost her energy, Sachiko continues her running, focusing more on that than the projectiles since working on projectiles at Tentsuke's is just aggravating her more.

Finally managed to get Leigh's help, at least with the running. I've learned how to stretch correctly for running, which is pretty much the same way I stretch before a spar but with a few important differences. It takes longer to stretch, but it's been worth it. I'm not feeling the urge to eat a handful of painkillers each night.

We've started racing each other. She wins, of course. She offered to give me a set of (significantly lighter) weights to help.

I'm seriously thinking of taking her up on it.

I'm getting better at my accuracy and speed when it comes to my projectiles, noticeable if only because I've levelled up in regards to the thing in Tentsuke-sensei's backyard. I also haven't destroyed any of his targets. Which, considering I wouldn't know how to fix/replace them...yeah.

So I asked Leigh what kind of missions she generally went on. Because it doesn't really seem like she goes on all that many. I learned that she does a lot of solo courier runs. Most she can get done same-day owing to her speed, otherwise depending on how far she needs to go it can take three or four. She doesn't do international runs very often and not by herself. Generally she goes with Tentsuke, or another chuunin when she does.

It would figure that writing the report on the mission would remind me of the oddity of Sai. I'd forgotten, really, because of the shit with Itae, but, there's really something wrong about Sai. Itae's a sociopath, but she's still got some emotions. ANBU or whatever didn't wholly kill them out of her, though they came close I guess.

Sai on the other hand... There's nothing. I don't want to think I'm waxing philosophical about anything but the feel of her? There IS no feel. She has a chakra presence expected of any shinobi, but there's no flavor for lack of a better word. She would remind me of Ibiki except for the the fact Ibiki's this very careful neutrality that occasionally shows a ripple of curiosity. But Sai has nothing. It's not even neutral. Neutral implies that something is purposely pushed aside.

There's no way a human being could be such an emotional blank slate. It's not like the slate was wiped clean, it's more the slate was never written on in the first place.

Which makes her fake expressions even more annoying.

She'd admitted herself that she doesn't understand emotions...which if I hold to the belief she was never permitted to feel in the first place could make sense.

But who the hell could have taught her that? Konoha's all about letting yourself feel but not letting those same feelings distract you during a mission. I should know, Kakami-sensei's made that unspokenly clear for years.

Still.

...Yeah, Sai's "still" all right. That lack of emotions makes her the perfect tool. I can't imagine that lack makes the Hokage comfortable at all, regardless how useful the tool is.

That reminds me, I need to talk to Kakami-sensei. Not just about Itae and the raiton thing I did, but now that I'm remembering the conversation with Sai, I don't like that wording she used. "Turn into a monster at will." As far as I know, only an actual select few know about my seal, nevermind what happens when I go level two. I don't like she knows. That blank slate bothers me because I can't know what she's thinking. There's what she says, but it could be the same farce those ugly fake expressions are.

She knew about Sakurai's seal. Combined with the comment about Naruko, that Sai has to be ANBU. I've never seen a tattoo, but it's possible not all ANBU are marked. That's the other reason I want to talk to Kakami-sensei. She was ANBU, and she might still know others (aside from Asuka) who would talk to her, and hopefully she'll tell me.

~~I remember seeing pride and approval on Neesan's face when I hurt her. I even received a compliment. "You've improved. Good." Why only then!?~~

[24] AKATSUKI TRACKING MISSION, AUGUST '17 REPORT

Date: 29 August '17

Team Sarutobi, consisting of Sarutobi Asuka, Sai, and myself (Uchiha Sachiko) met at the meeting spot at approximately 2040 on 11 August '17. The fourth member of our team, Nara Shikako, was unavailable due to already having been on a mission.

Sarutobi was the last to arrive. Whereas Sai and I were in our usual attire, meaning we wore nothing we hadn't seen the other in either during training or the last mission we went on together (December '16), Sarutobi arrived in full ANBU gear with her mask tied to her belt. She stated the following:

1. We were travel to the western Fire border to search for any rumors involving the Akatsuki Akasuna no Sasoriza, a missing-nin from Wind Country.
2. Said Akatsuki member specialized in poisons.

She then handed Sai and I each one capped syringe and explained the antivenin would negate the effects any poison Akasuna threw at us, but that they only lasted for five minutes. When I asked why only one syringe, she said the point is to run if she attacks, not to engage.

Next orders that we were to be split up: Sai (acting leader) and I would investigate the northern half of the western border while she would investigate the southern half. If we found Akasuna we were to tail as carefully as possible and send her word. If we found nothing we were to return to Konoha.

Because the previous mission had us covering a relatively smaller area in that splitting up wasn't necessary, I asked for instructions if we ran into other Akatsuki. Sarutobi noted we were prepared for Akasuna therefore we were to make a note of where we found them before getting away. Akasuna was to be our primary focus.

Day one was uneventful as we travelled.

Day two we encountered my sister, Uchiha Itae. While I assumed her partner Hoshigaki Kisa was in the area, we did not see her, nor did I detect her chakra presence. I told Sai I felt her presence, which meant that Itae could feel me. Sai gave the order to turn back, and while not particulary easy to do, I did. Sai indicated I was to precede her so I did.

Itae still managed to get around in front of us, causing up to stop. Sai positioned herself between us. Itae was blindfolded for reasons unknown. Sai speculated aloud it was because of something to do with Sharingan. A taunt I expect. Itae commented that she was willfully handicapping herself out of boredom.

I didn't attack immediately, but when I did, the first missed because she dodged. However she was still close enough that I was able to utilize the chakra-claws taught to me by Inuzuka Hanato some months back and inflict damage to Itae's thigh. Not enough to incapacitate but deep enough to bloody my own hands.

I opened curse seal halfway. Because this is Itae, handicap or no handicap I felt it more prudent to have as much of any advantage as possible without revealing anything that I was prepared to reveal. When she pulled off her blindfold, I opened it up the rest of the way.

What followed was the fist-fight bout (Leaf-style) that accounts for the trauma I sustained consistant with a massive beating. I was too 'in the moment' to realize when she spun up an illusion around me to stop it. The illusion was one that gave me the sensation that my speed and strength had increased exponentially while the marks on my skin spread to cover my completely. The first inkling I had of that it was an illusion was that it felt wrong, but I had forgotten that in the face of white snakes that suddenly sprung from my skin to wrap around me and choke me. There was a moment when my Sharingan saw through the illusion, and then I did something (I'm still not sure what) to break the illusion. It had the feel of a chidori in that it was lightning-based but it wasn't a chidori. In any event, the uncontrolled chakra use was enough that I passed out.

I didn't awake until a day later, according to Sai, and then we were at best not too far from Konoha. We discussed if I should be hospitalized and concluded that my muscles were still twitching painfully from my self-electrocution that would be the correct course of action. I wrote out my preliminary report. An hour later Rin-san treated me for the spasms and then indicated I should rest. He also told me that Asuka was in the hospital and that she would recover, but refused to say anything more before I had the chance to talk to Morino Ibiki.

I woke later when Morino came in, but Rin-san said I was not to be questioned about anything until my release from the hospital.

Personal Observatons:

Sarutobi wore her regular jounin outfit for all previous training sessions and the December '17 mission. The fact she wore her ANBU gear was unusual, as was the fact she split us up. For the last mission she was quite insistant that we should stick together. I also feel that had Sai and I actually encountered Akasuna we would have been woefully underprepared to deal with her by only having one syringe apiece.

Conclusion:

Splitting us up was a mistake.

I spoke with the Hokage, and he said I could allow a fourth person but the pay would still be for only three. Therefore, if Konohako agrees to this, you and she will be splitting your portion.

The Hokage's asked I organize and run this year's Capture the Flag for the academy. I inquired of Moegi if he would be interested for the mission, and he suggested your inclusion would be advantageous to achieving success.

However, if you choose to accept, note that the mission was planned for a total of four: myself and three others of my choosing. Funding has not been increased therefore you and Moegi would split his portion.
